Shake's Custard Stand
Oakmont and College Boulevard, Overland Park, Kansas.
Installed Fall 2004.
This new frozen custard stand is surrounded by concrete surfaces and is located along the edge of a mall parking lot. The half acre site is also flanked by parking lots on both sides. The decision to use native plant material was endorsed early in the design process to help plant survivability in the extreme heat conditions at the site.
Design criteria called for keeping the plan simple. Massing of shorter plants define driveways while canopy trees provide shade for customers as they enjoy their purchases. Using a combination of lawn and continuous shrub beds adds variety while the overall feel is one of simplicity.
The segmented retaining wall along College Boulevard has climbing vines native to our region. They were added to help soften the presentation of the concrete unit wall.
This $7,300 landscaping project was designed in April of 2004 and installed by the following December.
